Loop lighting is an essential lighting technique for portrait photographers. This lighting pattern will create a shadow that loops down and around the side of the nose, and on the neck and under the chin. These shadows subtly help define the subject’s bone structure.

In the graphic arts, the term chiaroscuro refers to a particular technique for making a woodcut print in which effects of light and shade are produced by printing each tone from a different wood block. The technique was first used in woodcuts in Italy in the 16th century, probably by the printmaker Ugo da Carpi.

Rembrandt lighting can be achieved with one key light that is placed approximately 5 feet from the model at an angle of 45 degrees to the side of the camera and roughly 2 feet above their eye level angled downwards.

1. Step 1: First, place your light source (key light) at a 45-degree angle facing towards the subject.
2. Step 2: Next, put the reflector on the opposite side of the subject, at about the same height as the light source.
3. Step 3: Stand between the reflector and the light source.

High-key lighting reduces the lighting ratio in the scene, meaning there’s less contrast between the darker tones and the brighter areas. Alternatively, low-key lighting has greater contrast between the dark and light areas of the image with a majority of the scene in shadow.

Lighting is important in video and film production because cameras do not respond to lights in the same way that the human eye does. The correct lighting can determine the mood of the scene and can evoke a more dramatic or subtle palette for the film.

These basic qualities of light are; INTENSITY, FORM, COLOR, DIRECTION and MOVEMENT. These are the lighting designer’s tools.

Sound in theatre goes beyond finding the right sound effects for a production. Sound can be used to establish the time or location of a performance, or to create and enhance mood and atmosphere. Time and location are the ‘when’ and ‘where’ of a production.
